Scotland has its own scheme — and it's potentially more generous

£15,000 Combined grant + loan available through Home Energy Scotland

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme does not apply in Scotland. Scottish homeowners have access to Home Energy Scotland — a separate, devolved scheme that may offer more support than the BUS grants available in England and Wales.

We're building our Scotland guide We're currently developing a dedicated Scotland guide covering Home Energy Scotland in full — eligibility, grant amounts, loan terms, and how to apply. Register below to be first to know when it launches.

Why Scotland is different

Energy efficiency policy is devolved in the UK. Scotland has its own framework — Home Energy Scotland — administered by the Scottish Government through Energy Saving Trust. It operates separately from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which is an England and Wales programme run by Ofgem.

This means Scottish homeowners should not assume that information about the BUS — including the £7,500 and £9,000 figures you may have seen — applies to them. It does not. The Scottish scheme has different terms, different amounts, and a different application process.

What Home Energy Scotland covers

Home Energy Scotland offers a combination of grants and interest-free loans for energy efficiency improvements including heat pumps, insulation, and other low-carbon heating upgrades. The total support available can reach £15,000, combining a grant element and an interest-free loan repaid over time.

Unlike the BUS in England and Wales, some components of Home Energy Scotland are means-tested or subject to income criteria, while others are available more broadly. The specific amounts available depend on your circumstances, property type, and the measures being installed.
